Pictorial photography displays artistic quality of the presentation of the subject, rather than with the subject itself. Did the photographer simply record the subject, or enhance the viewer’s interest in the subject through the photographic process. Pictorialism may be accomplished by careful composition, meticulous photographic technique and proper presentation.

This category is judged every other month starting in September.

* Only if you intend to have your slide submitted to N4C to be mailed to other clubs for

Judging Criteria

Technique: Focus, lighting, color rendition, exposure, print quality, mounting.

Composition: Arrangement of all elements within the picture area so the subject matter is presented as a harmonious, well-balanced photograph.

Interest: Originality, imagination, interpretation, subject, impact, mood, humor, etc.

NORTH CENTRAL CAMERA CLUB COUNCIL - N4C

The Sioux City Camera Club (SCCC) is a member of the North Central Camera Club Council (N4C). As a member our club may enter 8 entries for each of the N4C categories listed below. Each "maker", or photography, is limited to one entry per category. These entries are judged by other N4C clubs. Entries receiving a ribbon in the monthly competitions held from September through May, will be entered in the year-end competition.

1. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO HAVE A PRINT OR SLIDE JUDGED IN THE SCCC MONTHLY COMPETITION TO BE SUBMITTED FOR N4C JUDGING.

If you are a SCCC Member, you may give your entry to the club member responsible for sending entries to N4C, in a specific category.

2. A MAKER IS UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO HAVE A PRINT OR SLIDE SENT AWAY FOR JUDGING BY OTHER N4C CAMERA CLUBS. IF THAT IS THE MAKER’S WISH, IT MUST BE CLEARLY STATED.

N4C - - - DIGITAL SLIDES

Digital Pictorial Digital Nature

Digital Contemporary Digital Photojournalism

Image Format -- Image files must be in jpg file format. Save jpg file using sRGB color space standard is recommended for consistent color under the projection conditions used for judging the contest. No logo or copyright is to appear on the image for judging. Copyrights may be included in the file metadata.

Image Size – The longest side is to be no more than 1024 pixels. Please keep the file size to no more than 500 KB.

N4C - - - CONTEST CATEGORIES

Items 1 - 4 are the same as the SCCC monthly judging. Items 5 to 18 are more specific. "Photojournalism" has it's own criteria for size and mounting. Photojournalism Slide and Digital entries will be judged together. Note Items 11, 12 & 13.

1. Color Prints

2. Black & White Pictorial Prints

3. 2x2 Pictorial Color Slides

4. 2 1/4 Color Slides - Special Medium Format

5. Nature Prints: Black & White or Color

6. 2x2 Nature Slides

Nature photography is intended to convey the sense of the natural world, absent any evidence of the presence of, or interference by the human element. How well one conceals the human element matters. Zoo animals are accepted if the setting is natural and there is no depiction of the cage or bars. Domestic animals and plants are generally rejected even though they may be encountered in the wild. Photos of a pet snake or lizard are more likely to succeed than those of a dog or cat.

7. Photo-Travel Color Prints

8. 2x2 Photo-Travel Slides

Photo-travel photography is the photographic depiction of a new environment or the means used to get there. There is no definition of how far away or different that environment must be to qualify as “travel.” The image must have good photographic technique and the ability to convey the feeling and flavor of the place. Emphasize the character that makes the location unique.

The name of the locale where the picture was made must be on the slide or print.

9. Contemporary/Creative Prints

10. 2x2 Contemporary/Creative Slides and DIGITAL

Contemporary/Creative photography. This area of photography bridges between photographic realism and creative art, concentrating on form and color. The result is important, not the means used to create the photo. This is an opportunity be creative and experiment. Examples of some methods used to alter an image and producing an “abstract” effect are; ultra-high contrast, black light, bas-relief, solarization, multi-images, trick lenses and filters. Just about anything goes!

11. Photojournalism Prints - must be submitted without mounts or on Color and Black & White lightweight mounts not to exceed 8" x 12"

12. 2x2 Photojournalism Slides

13. Photojournalism - DIGITAL- Will be judged with the slides.

Photojournalism is the telling of a story by the use of a picture with an element of human interest, good composition and technique. Such as photos seen in newspapers and magazines depicting an event or activity. A great photo is worth a thousand words and tells it's own story, but the caption or title is also judged.

Photojournalism images may not be manipulated technically to "create" a print, depicting a photojournalism event. The photo must remain as the image was captured when the shutter was clicked. However, adjusting brightness and contrast, a normal part of the "printing" process is allowed.

14. DIGITAL Pictorial slides

16. DIGITAL Nature Slides

17. DIGITAL Contemporary/Creative

18. Photo Essay (Digital) - April only

My thanks to Mike Walsh for providing these notes during my absence this night. -Randy

Minutes of S.C.C.C.
Date: September 10, 2009
Place: First Presbyterian Church

The first meeting of the 2009-2010 year came to order at 7:30 pm. Approximately 30 persons attended. Three guests attended: Jodie Sheppard, Sherry Heimbecker, and Bob Pierson. All three joined the club as members.

Co-Presidents Larry Crabb and Paula Warp led the discussion regarding the new and current rules on the size of prints and the process of submitting slides. The members discussed the purpose and goals of N4C and the procedure for submissions to N4C. The members who have accepted responsibility for submission to N4C are:

Steve Paulson - Color Prints, all digital
Scott Bricker - B & W and Nature Prints
Bob Gillespie - Photo Journalism Prints and Slides and 2 1/4" slides
Kevin Smith - Photo Travel Prints and Slides and 2 x 2" slides
John Anderson - Contemporary Prints and Slides

N4C submissions: It was noted that a member can only submit one photo per category per month but can submit a print and a slide of the same photo in the same category. However, in the photo journalism (PJ) category, a member can only submit one photo per month that is either a print or a slide, but not both.

Paula provided handouts that included our club and N4C submission rules for various categories and the club meeting dates for the years 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. Paula also circulated a form to volunteer for judging and providing treats.

It was noted that membership dues ($25 for single and $35 for family membership) are due now and will be overdue as of November 1, 2009.

The special presentation for the meeting was conducted by John Anderson. His "Paint with Light Technique" was very interesting and generated a great deal of discussion and questions. John presented a handout describing the technique which can also be found online at www.photosbyJohn.com

The next meeting is September 24.
