v First meeting is Thursday, 9 September at 7:30 PM at the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of 6th and Nebraska.

  • Steve Pa. has the Portraiture program. Bring your camera!
  • What Makes It Work, where an SCCC member shows a favorite photo, famous or infamous, and describes why it is a great photo. Paula W. is first up.
  • The View and Review topic is Insects. This is a non-competitive showing of your interpretation of a topic. Bring an unmounted 8×10 or smaller print to pass around and discuss.

v SCCC member Scott B. took a First Place and a Third Place at the Iowa State Fair. SCCC was privileged to see both photos before they became famous.

v SCCC Dues are due! We need the money!

New Business:

v Siouxland Stories from Work, call to photographers. Bob G. reviewed the criteria for this juried exhibition for the Sioux City Art Center. A separate e-mail will be sent with many more details.

Old Business:

v Michael Forsberg and Dan O’Brien are coming to Sioux City on Sunday, 26 September at 7:30 PM in the St. Francis Center, Briar Cliff University. There will be a separate e-mail with the details. SCCC pledged $50 to help bring the authors to town.

President Paula W. called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.

Announcements:
• We need money for your banquet attendance tonight! Cost is $12 per person. Our speaker is Zack C. The banquet begins at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, 11 May at our normal location. We will also see the DVD invitation from LaCrosse Camera Club for the upcoming convention.
• Pick up your prints at the Art Center. Our “Urban Landscapes of Siouxland” show closed on 30 April. Prints need to be out of there no later than Tuesday, 4 May. Our show made the Top 6 List of Things-To-Do in Siouxland by the Weekender paper.
• The Year End categories are segregated on the back table. More work is here tonight from our N4C representatives. Mark your submissions (!) for the appropriate category.
• A list is going around to sign up for treats and/or judging for next season. Contact Mike W. if the list doesn’t get to you and you want to help.
• There is an instruction sheet available on one of the other tables for submitting images to N4C’s digital categories. You submit your entry to Steve Pa. and he sends our digital images to the N4C judge.
• Summer field trips are arranged. They will be listed in the next newsletter or you can contact Bob G. for more information.
• Randy W. suggested a bicycle field trip at Adams Preserve as well as spending some time in and around the buildings.
• We would bicycle from the visitor center at least down to the Missouri River overlook.
• We would stop for anything of interest along the way.
• We would return and then go through the buildings.
• Randy W. will look into dates and times with the staff at Adams. This would probably be in July, after the Fourth and not the weekend that RAGRAI begins (Saturday and Sunday, 24 and 25 July).
• N4C asked SCCC to judge 35 mm Nature slides in October 2010. No volunteer has yet come forth. We’ll check again at the banquet.
• PSA sponsors a Council Challenge for camera club organizations. N4C was well represented and did quite well.
• N4C monthly winners were announced. In the PJ Print category Bob R. had a short story regarding his submission on the back of the print. The judges appreciated that. Keep this in mind for future print competitions.
• There is a rumor that another camera club is forming in the Sioux City area. Has anyone heard anything about this?
• There are fliers on the side table for the upcoming Loess Hills Prairie Seminar. The dates are 4, 5, and 6 June. There are a variety of indoor (Onawa) and outdoor (Loess Hills Wildlife Area, Castana and elsewhere) programs (including photography). There are programs for adults, programs for kids, and programs for the whole family. Check the website for more information and registration. http://www.nwaea.k12.ia.us/en/upcoming_events/loess_hills_prairie_seminar/

New Business:
• Election of Officers. It was moved and seconded to accept the slate of officers nominated. The vote was unanimous. Our officers are:
o President: Mike W.
o Vice-President: Dawn M.
o Treasurer: Bill S.
o Randy Williams was appointed to continue as Secretary
• Randy W. stated that he and Brain H. from the Center for Prairie Studies at Briar Cliff University are working on bringing photographer Michael Forsberg and writer Dan O’Brien to Sioux City on Sunday, 26 September or Monday 27 September.
• Michael just published a photography book about the Great Plains with essays by Dan.
• The two are at the South Dakota Festival of Books in Sioux Falls 24, 25 and part of 26 September 2010. That’s why we want to get them to Sioux City.
• Estimated cost for the two speakers is $2000.
• It was moved, seconded and approved to earmark $50.00 to assist in bringing Michael and Dan to Sioux City if arrangements can be made.
• The N4C convention-planning manual has been revised. At this time there is no convention site for 2012. Should Sioux City host the 2012 convention? Think about it.

Old Business:
• Fran K. made a very quick report from Springbrook. It was a good time but it rained every day. Nine attended from SCCC. The keynote speaker discussed judging and judging guidelines. It was very good. The speaker would be willing to come to Sioux City for a program.

Jim H. presented the 35 mm slides.
Bob G. presented the prints.

Adjourned at 9:25 PM.

v Thanks to our members who diligently submit all of our work to N4C every month!

v Fourth Place ribbons are here and will be divided between the two judging cases.

v Springbrook registration is due 14 April.

Old Business:

v The reception for our “Urban Landscapes of Siouxland” show at the Sioux City Art Center is Sunday, 11 April from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

v Per Dawn M.:  SCCC is registered as a non-profit organization. Ron N. registered our group. Every two years we need to re-register. This was last done in January 2009. Ron N. will need to re-register our group in January 2011.

New Business:

v Changes beyond our control are being made to the SCCC blog. Larry and Steve will find a new location for the blog and our current site will remain as an archive.

v The suggestion was made to move our site or open a new site on Facebook or Twitter (MySpace?).

v Print Equity with N4C. Steve Paulson drafted a proposal to go to Springbrook. Not every photographer is represented every month since size-categories were dropped. Print numbers need to be pro-rated based on club membership. We used to have 16 photographers represented. We now have 8. Our proposal will need to be sent to a current director of N4C since Springbrook is a director’s meeting. Steve’s proposal was approved and voted unanimously to send to a director for presentation at Springbrook.

Old Business:

v A question was asked about having the club roster on the website. It was decided not to do this for privacy reasons. If you need a roster, then please e-mail Larry C. and a copy will be sent to the requestor.

v Carl H. will attach a .pdf copy to the next newsletter so everyone will have a copy.

Carl H. presented the prints.

Paula Warp called the meeting to order at 7:34 PM.

Announcements:
• More summer field trip ideas are needed. Contact Bob Gillespie.
• N4C is looking for volunteers for judging in late 2010 and early 2011.
• October 2010 Nature 2 x 2 slides
• November 2010 6 x 6 (2-1/4) slides – Randy W. has volunteered for this event.
• February 2011 PJ Print and Slide judging
• N4C Annual Convention due date for submission of work is typically 1 July.
• Springbrook spring mini-N4C convention registration forms were handed out.

Old Business:
• SCCC show at the Sioux City Art Center.
• Prints need to be delivered to the Art Center on Friday, 19 March or Saturday, 20 March.
• The exhibit will run from 27 March through 30 April.
• See below in New Business for the reception.
• Year-End Banquet on 11 May
• Cost will be about $11.00 per person.
• Zack Chwirka is our speaker with the topic of evidence and crime scene investigational uses of photography.
• Due date for submissions has yet to be announced.
• Categories are listed on the website. They will be reviewed in club as well.
• N4C category reps will need to return work by that date.
• Talk with Mike W. if you wish to help out with any of the aspects of preparing for the banquet.

New Business:
• The reception for our “Urban Landscapes of Siouxland” show is scheduled for Sunday, 11 April from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Carl probably needs some help to get this all arranged. Talk with him about it at an upcoming meeting.
• 2011 SCCC show at the SC Art Center.
• Big news of an Art Center-sponsored juried exhibit in place of a SCCC show.
• Theme will be “Siouxland At Work” or something very close to that.
• The competition will be open to any photographer within an approximate 50-mile radius of Sioux City.
• Further details will be forthcoming
• It was moved and seconded to accept and cast the SCCC vote for the slate of N4C officers as submitted to our club. The list includes our own Kevin Smith as one of the potential new directors of N4C.
• A nominating committee for SCCC officers was formed. If you wish to help the club, talk with Jack B., Marilyn P., or Jerry W.
• N4C print numbers.
• A proposal for the upcoming Springbrook mini-convention
• N4C decreased the number of print entries allowed by dismissing the Large and Small categories.
• We went from 8 submissions in two categories (Large and Small) in Color Print, Nature Print and Black & White Print divisions to 8 submissions in only one category of the same divisions.
• This effectively cut in half the number of entries we can submit and also disenfranchised some photographers. Why bother submitting work when it won’t be going any further to regional N4C competition? Some members are no longer represented in N4C competition due to the lack of submission space.
• We want to allow photographers to compete. We wish to increase the number of entries allowed. Print size guidelines will remain the same.

Program:
• Bob Rasmus discussed action photography
• View & Review was sepia toning of prints
• What Makes It Work by Mike Walsh

Larry Crabb called the meeting to order at 7:34 PM.

Announcements:
• Steve Paulson needs more e-submissions for this month. We judged Digital Contemporary/Creative images for N4C and are allowed double submissions this month.
• If you have an idea for a Field Trip or would like to lead a field trip email Bob Gillespie phylabob@msn.com and let him know. If you have an idea for a program or would like to present one also let Bob know. We are currently planning for this summer and for the 2010 – 2011 club year.
• Our year-end banquet is Tuesday, 11 May. It is a catered affair at the church. Festivities will begin at 6:00 PM.
• The next N4C convention has a website in place: http://n4clacrosse2010.com/. Dates are September 16 – 19 in LaCrosse, WI.
• Springbrook Mini-Convention is set for April 23 – 25 at Springbrook State Park, near Guthrie Center, IA. Registration form is at: http://www.n4c.us/SpringbrookRegistration2010.pdf. Online registration is not available. You need to print and mail the .pdf. More information is available at: http://www.n4c.us/.

Old Business:
• SCCC show at the Sioux City Art Center.
• Information is available in the January newsletter.
• Prints need to be delivered to the Art Center on Friday, 19 March or Saturday, 20 March.
• The exhibit will run from 27 March through 30 April.
• Print requirements
• Two entries per photographer
• Black frame no larger than 16 x 20
• Print must be under glass.
• Wire hanger on the back adjusted to 2 inches from the top of the frame
• Photographer’s name and print title must be on the back of the print.
• The Art Center will hang our work.
• Name and title tags will be prepared by the Art Center
• E-mail your name, title of the print, and print price (or not-for-sale) to Barbara Huculak huculab@witcc.edu before 1 March.
• If for sale, remember that the Art Center gets 30% of the sale price. Adjust your price accordingly.
• Show theme is Urban Landscapes of Siouxland
• We are using a very liberal definition of “urban” and “landscape”.
• We consider many of the small towns around Siouxland as “urban”.
• There are many green areas within Siouxland that may be used for landscapes, such as Bacon Creek or Sioux City Prairie.
• Reception for the show.
• Barbara Ann, Bob G. and Carl H. will spearhead a reception committee for the show.
• We may be able to piggyback with a reception for another show at the Art Center.
• We’ll check the feasibility of it first then see how much interest there is with the general membership. We will need to coordinate dates and food.

New Business:
• 2011 SCCC show at the SC Art Center.
• There was much discussion about a theme. Some ideas were:
• Look at the Iowa State Fair topics and borrow from their list
• A Day in the Life of Siouxland
• Photos of Sioux City and Woodbury County public servants at their jobs. We would need to coordinate with their supervisors.
• Variations of previous themes of “round” and “red”.
• People of Siouxland
• Some were uncomfortable with the legalities of street versus portrait photography for display at the Art Center. Would we need a model release for the work?
• Some of the other suggested topics also involve people photography.
• The discussion left a better feeling about a “People of Siouxland” theme but more work is required to provide better guidelines.
• If photographers are concerned about their submitted work, then the print should be marked as “Not For Sale”.
• If the subject is underage, then there should be a signed release from a parent or guardian.
• This will be a busy summer for Siouxland with the start of RAGBRAI and other annual events like Awesome Biker Nights, Art Splash, River-Cade, Riverssance, and Saturday in the Park. These are some great opportunities for people photography.

Program:
• Scott Bricker presented his view of macro photography.
