Announcements:
• Bring your appetite SCCC Annual Banquet is Thursday, 12 May at the church at 6:00 PM. Cost will be $12 per person. The meal is catered by Hy-Vee. Our program is Don P.

• We need volunteers for some open judging positions and for providing treats for next season. We really need someone to judge work in September!
• Two (2) banquet sign up sheets are going around as well.
• There is also a sign up sheet for the Broken Kettle bison field trip. We need to give Scott M. a number of attendees before 1 June so he can properly prepare for our visit. Scott says we will find the bison in Broken Kettle Grasslands. Meet at 8:00 AM at the main entrance to Riverside Park in order to car pool north to Broken Kettle. Randy will include a .pdf with the minutes regarding posting photos to a Nature Conservancy Flickr site if anyone wishes to share their photos.
• Clean it up! Thanks to the brave souls who cleaned our storage closet. Please take your prints and slides home tonight!
• We thought we’d try rearranging the chairs tonight to make sure everyone has a good look at the prints. Tell us if you like the new arrangements or not.

• The slate of SCCC officers was announced:

o It was moved, seconded and unanimously voted to accept the slate of officers as presented.
• Larry C. and Bob G. are working on getting our club’s constitution and by-laws up to date. They will also match our judging rules and standards with N4C.

New Business:
• Bill S. reserved the picnic shelter at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve for us from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, 12 August.
• Steve Pa checked on chipboard as a backing for photographs. Cost is $0.18 per sheet from Verzani Printing. It provides a better presentation than an unmounted print. We will consider a club-based purchase.

o The Durham Museum (http://www.durhammuseum.org/), Omaha, NE is hosting Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs from 9 April through 10 July 2011.
o The Battle of Wilson’s Creek, the second major battle of the Civil War, will be reenacted on property adjacent to Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield (http://www.nps.gov/wicr/index.htm), near Springfield, MO. The dates are: 12 August through 14 August 2011.
o Ted Wilson, associate professor of biology at Briar Cliff University, is planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands from 5 January through 12 January 2012. All-inclusive cost would be $3600 per person from Omaha to Quito, Ecuador and back. For more details, contact him at Ted.Wilson briarcliff.edu or call 712-279-5498.
• Signs of the times:
o A questionnaire is making the rounds for our education committee. We need input for programs and field trips.

• First field trip of the year is Saturday, 11 June. We’ve made arrangements with Scott Moats of Broken Kettle Grasslands to visit the bison herd. We will meet at 8:00 AM at Riverside Park in order to car pool north to Broken Kettle.
• Clean it up!
o Prints are accumulating in our storage closet. Please take them home!
o 35mm slides are here, please take yours home tonight.
o 2-1/4 slides will be returned at the next meeting.
o Digital awards are here, too.
• The Weather Channel is broadcasting a photography-based show hosted by Peter Lik. It showcases travel/landscape/scenic/nature photography from some of the best locations in the US. The 30-minute show is broadcast several times per week.
• N4C Annual Competition is coming. Carl H. will compile a list of our N4C winners to allow us a jump-start on getting them together. N4C has been a little slow getting the list to us in times past.
• We need more photographers submitting .jpg images for N4C digital categories. Contact Steve Pa. (F64JEE aol.com) for specific information.
o Images are 1024 pixels on the longest edge and saved to an “8” or “9” to provide a .jpg no more than 500K in size.
o Look at the images on the N4C website for some ideas (http://www.n4c.us/Winner_Galleries.htm) and then crank the saturation!
o Try and project the image or look at the image on a flat-screen television to see how it would appear when digitally projected.
o Categories include:
• DN – Digital Nature
• DP – Digital Pictorial
• DJ – Digital Photojournalism
• DC – Digital Creative/Contemporary
o We need more entries to stay competitive and pull some N4C points.
o It was suggested to have the first program of the next season to review these requirements.

o SC Art Center has SCCC scheduled for a 2-month, non-juried show in the Gardner Room (First floor). We need a theme for the show! Contact Bob G. (phylabob msn.com) with ideas.

Bob G. showed a DVD of award-winning PSA photos. We also had a chance to preview Reflections, a photo essay by Vernice K. for N4C competition. A third DVD was to be shown as well.

v Steve Pa. reports that N4C requests SCCC to judge Color Prints in March 2012. If you would like to judge some of the best color prints in N4C territory, then please let Steve Pa. know.

v Springbrook is the last weekend in April (29 April – 1 May).

  • Information can be found on the N4C website: http://www.n4c.us/SpringbrookProgram2011a.pdf.
  • Registrations will NOT be accepted after Wednesday, 20 April.
  • Once-Per-Year Panoramic (Pano) Competition is held at Springbrook. Get your entries to someone attending from SCCC if you wish to compete.
  • This is traditionally a smaller meeting than the N4C Annual Convention but the programs are absolutely wonderful and it all takes place within a great setting (Springbrook State Park, near Guthrie Center, IA) with great facilities.
  • Meals and lodging in the Springbrook dorms for $91 per person.
  • Just come for the meals and programs (lodging elsewhere) for $76 per person.

v SCCC Annual Banquet is Thursday, 12 May at the church at 6:00 PM. Bring your appetite! Cost will be $12 per person. The meal is catered by Hy-Vee. A sign up sheet is making the rounds.

v A survey questionnaire is also making the rounds. Our education committee needs input for field trips this summer and programs next fall.

v First field trip of the year is Saturday, 11 June. We’ve made arrangements with Scott Moats of Broken Kettle Grasslands http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/iowa/placesweprotect/broken-kettle-grasslands-preserve.xml to visit the bison herd. No time has yet been set. We will set a departure time and location next meeting.

v It was moved, seconded and unanimously approved to move $250 from our savings account to our checking account. Postage consumes a major portion of our budget.

v Fran K. proposed a use of SCCC funds for building a library of current photographic books and other materials. SCCC has library space within the church but most of the titles are older and deal with traditional photographic techniques. We need to rebuild our library with current materials, editions and techniques. The materials would be available to all club members to check out and use.

v The SCCC nominating committee will have a report for us.

  • The committee report is read at the first meeting in April.
  • Elections are held the second meeting in April.
  • Committee members are:  Steve Pe., Ron N., and Roger VanK. Thanks for your work.

v We are currently complying with N4C requirements for print submission. For our members who submit work to N4C, and for our treasury, postage costs can be about $25 per month.

  • N4C does allow the submission of unmounted and unmatted prints. Should SCCC move in this direction?
  • Chipboard is lighter that standard poster board. Should SCCC look at using this product instead?

v Individual clubs have their own digital judging. Should SCCC begin doing something similar?

New Business:

v SCCC needs to cast its votes for N4C officers at the 31 March meeting. SCCC is allotted 11 votes. The new list of N4C officers will be reviewed.

v SCCC surveys were distributed, completed and returned. We want to know what YOU want us to do for YOU! The surveys help in planning summer field trips and programs for next season. More surveys will be available if you missed the meeting. Or, contact Bob G. with your ideas, wants and desires.

v Steve Pa. also reports that digital entries are not being named correctly. Please use the following format:

  • 01,SE<your member number>,D(N/P/J/C),TitleOfYourImage.jpg
    • Begin every image you submit with “01”. Your image will be renumbered when the work is submitted.
    • SE<your member number> “SE” is the official N4C designation for Sioux City Camera Club. Larry Crabb assigns your individual member. He provides the number after club dues are paid.
    • D(N or P or J or C) represents Digital followed by these categories:
      • Nature
      • Pictorial
      • Journalism
      • Creative
      • TitleOfYourImage. Do not use spaces or underscore ( _ ) to separate the words. Simply capitalize the sequential words of the title. Capitalization is the best word break.
      • Image format is .jpg. The longest edge of the image is 1024 pixels. Compress the file size to “8” with your preferred image manipulation program.
  • Digital submission deadline is the 13th of every month. Please have your entries to Steve before that date.

• Bob G. will also conduct a program in Digital Photography at the Northeast Nebraska Community College campus in Sioux Sioux City, NE from 19 April to 26 April.
• Get your Siouxland Stories from Work prints at the SC Art Center the sooner the better. Ultimate date is Saturday, 19 February.
• Dawn M. asked about past topics for Photo Essay competition. Topics are pretty open. A list may be available in the N4C Directory, otherwise Ken J. might have a list available.
• Scott B. will judge prints this month. Marilyn P. and Curt S. have treats for the next meeting, 24 February.
• Our March program will feature Jack B. demonstrating Photoshop layers. April program will be a DVD by Scott Kelby regarding clean up work with Photoshop.

• The SCCameraClub.org website is not up-to-date with information about the club secretary position or, more importantly, with our by-laws for slide and print judging. The website is not consistent with current N4C entry requirements.
• In March, make plans for some financial discussion for Sioux City Camera Club. Our two financial statements prepared by Larry C. earlier this month are attached to the e-mail with these minutes. Look them over and we’ll discuss them in March.

Jack B. reviewed prints. Chuck P. graciously volunteered to review 35 mm and 2-1/4 slides for us.

Announcements:

v For Results Night, 27 January:

  • Jack B. is head print judge this month.
  • There remains no slide judge for January. Volunteers, please step forward.
  • Bob G. has treats.

v 10 February Program Night.

  • Treats are by Bill S. (this differs from the published assignment).
  • Roger Van K. has “What Makes It Work”.
  • “View and Review” subject is a toy.
  • Scott B. is print judge this month.
  • Published program is “Protecting Photos” by Bob R. and Fan K.

v From Curt S. – Springbrook is the last weekend in April (29 April – 1 May).

  • Information will be out in the next N4C News Bulletin and can be found on the N4C website: http://www.n4c.us/SpringbrookProgram2011a.pdf.
  • Panoramic (Pano) Competition is held at Springbrook. Get your entries to someone attending from SCCC if you wish to compete.
  • This is traditionally a smaller meeting than the N4C Annual Convention but the programs remain absolutely wonderful all within a great setting (Springbrook State Park).

v President Mike W. is preparing a history of the Sioux City Camera Club. Bring any historic materials to the next meeting. Mike will copy them and return them to you.

v Ron N. found some fliers prepared for a SCCC exhibit at the Southern Hills Mall 25 years ago.

v “Siouxland Stories from Work” photographs will be available for return at the end of January. The show runs through 20 January.

Our celebration was called to order by president Mike W. at 6:00 PM. Let’s eat!

Announcements:
• Thanks to everyone who brought the great food.
• Thanks to Mary W. for providing the table decorations.
• Beware of AOL account hackers. Larry C. had someone change his password on his AOL e-mail account without his knowledge. He got his account back but it was time consuming. Be sure to save the information you provided to AOL (or whatever provider) when you first set up your account. That initial information was required to regain control of his account.
• The next time SCCC has a potluck bring the recipe for the dish you’re contributing to the potluck.
• Reminders for January 2011:
o Program Night showcases Wildlife Photography
o View and Review: Fruit and/or Vegetable with a challenge to try a light painting technique.
o What Makes It Work: Switched to Randy W.
o Print Judge: Jack B.
o Slide Judge: TBD for both 35 mm slides and 2-1/4 slides. Any volunteers? Paula W. and Tom A. are willing to take the March Slide Judging.

Our meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by president Mike W.

Announcements:

v Christmas party is Thursday, 16 December at 6:00 PM at the church. SCCC provides the main dish, plates, cups, beverage and tableware. Members A – L should bring a salad or appetizer while M – Z members should bring a potato, veggie or dessert.

v Our Iowa magazine just announced entries for their 2011 Photo Contest. Categories are:  Iowa Scenery, Iowa People, Iowa Humor, and Corn-Fed Kids. Entry deadline is Wednesday, 15 December 2010. Submit 8×10 color prints or color slides (nothing mentioned about digital images) to:  Photo Contest, Our Iowa, 1606 Golden Aspen Drive, Suite 109, Ames, IA  50010; telephone:  515-232-0075. Grand Prize is a 2-day Mississippi River cruise aboard the Twilight riverboat from the Quad Cities to Dubuque and back.

v Sioux City Art Center deadline for entries for their 64th Juried Art Exhibit was 30 November 2010.

v Kodak photo paper is being discounted at Staples.

v Take a bow 2-1/4 photographers:  A clean sweep of November N4C competition with First Place, Second Place, Third Place, three Honorable Mentions and a Merit Award! No one could recall anything like this happening before. Great job, everyone!

v Stocking Stuffer idea from Bob G:  The Moment It Clicks book by Joe McNally. Cost is about $30.

New Business:

v View and Review for January is a fruit of vegetable. Here’s a challenge:  Try light painting with John A.’s technique for something new and different. Bob G. will e-mail his copy of John’s instructions to Randy for distribution to the other club members.

Old Business:

v We had a fabulous reception at the Art Center for Siouxland Stories from Work. There is good work on display and everyone involved in organizing the reception and the event did good work as well. Well done, everyone!

View and Review was “Coffee Maker”. Carl H. revealed some of his secrets for Creative Photography and Mike W. reviewed some of the requirements and qualifications for the use of model releases.
